Plan a shot, generate it, and use it in the edit.

Create is the workspace for material you don't have yet: a background plate, a cutaway, a sound effect, a line of voice-over. It runs the models you have connected, keeps each run with its inputs and results, and adds the results to the project.

Storyboard the sequence first.

The Storyboard page is a list of shots. Describe a shot in a sentence and add it, then the next, until the sequence reads. For each one, either sketch the frame yourself with Draw this shot, or choose Generate this shot to make a frame with an image model from the description.

A board of rough frames is a cheap way to agree on a sequence before anything more expensive is generated or shot.

A page for each kind of result.

Create has a page for each kind of material. Each page lists the models you have connected that can do that job, and shows the selected model's own inputs.

Images
Stills from a description, and from reference images where the model accepts them.
Image edits
Changes to an existing image, such as extending a background or replacing a sky.
Video
A moving clip from a description and any references the model accepts, such as a starting image.
Music
A score or a sting from the model's inputs.
Sound effects
A single sound, such as a door, an impact or a room tone.
Voice
Speech from text, with the voices and reference inputs the model offers.

When a model you add provides some other kind of operation, it gets a page of its own.

Each model brings its own inputs.

The form on each page comes from the selected model. You see exactly the fields it requires and the options it offers.

References come from the project. Choose an image, a single frame of a video, a range of a video, or an audio clip, according to what the model accepts. Crop a reference to the part that matters, and order several references when the model uses them in sequence. Output size can match the composition, or use portrait or square presets.

Every run is kept with the project.

Choose Generate and the run appears in the page's history while it works. Results stay there with the inputs that produced them, so you can see later which prompt and references made a shot. Media from a run is added to the project with a record of the run that made it.

Stop requests cancellation. A remote provider may take a moment to confirm it, and the run shows its actual state until it does. If a run fails, read its message before generating again: a rejected input, a timeout and an uncertain submission call for different responses. Troubleshooting covers each.

Put the results to work.

Choose Use on timeline to place a result, with the same choice of track, timing and source range as any other media. From there it is footage: trim it, key over it, mask it, grade it and animate around it.

A generated clip is finished pixels. To move a figure separately from its background, or to change a title later, generate the parts separately and build the shot from layers in the editor. Ape can do that assembly: ask for a plate and separate foreground elements, and it generates them, places them at different depths and sets up the camera.

Which models you can use.

Grapple has presets for image generation from Google (Gemini Image) and OpenAI (GPT Image 1), video from Google Veo, and speech from Google. Other providers can be added in Settings > Models, and Ape can set up a new model for you from the provider's documentation. The Music and Sound effects pages work with any model you add that offers those operations.

Generation runs through your own provider account and is billed by the provider.

Try it on footage you already know.

Pick a short clip and one job, such as a lower third or a trimmed opening. The getting-started guide takes you from import to an exported file.
